My thoughts on “Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austin

I finished reading the book yesterday and I must say that it was a pretty good read. I got interested in Jane Austin because so many people have associated her with “romance” and praised her ability to depict emotion so I had to find out for myself what the fuss was all about.
Since this was my first Jane Austin novel, I didn’t know what to expect. The story line was alright but the characterization was fascinating. I especially enjoyed the character and personality of Elinor even though I’m the opposite of her. I liked how she kept calm and cool, the restraint of her manner, and how prudent she was when faced with difficult situation like when Lucy was telling her about her engagement to Edward and or when Willoughby came and revealed his heart to her. I certainly wish and I’m working on having the self-control and logic of Elinor.
What’s interesting though is that the stark contrast between the two sisters: Elinor and Marianne was supposed to represent what the literary scene in Austin’s day. Elinor represents the classic trend of traditions and self-image and Marianne represents the new trend the encouraged expression and indulgence in nature and luxury. In other words, I feel like Marianne’s character should have been more appealing to the reader but I much preferred the depth of Elinor’s character.
